Costumes are outfits worn for special occasions, celebrations or performances. They are often designed to depict historical or imaginative subjects. The history of costume is closely linked to the development of art and culture. Costumes are a key element of carnival festivities, such as Mardi Gras and the Halloween party. They are also commonly worn in parades, at public sporting events and at private masquerade balls or fancy dress parties. Costumes may also be created for specific purposes, such as mascot costumes or theatrical costumes. Professional costume companies design and produce custom-made costumes for clients.
In the case of zoos, there are occasions when the animals wear costumes to help educate the public about their natural habitat and environment. Zoos also use costumes to help train their animals and promote awareness about animal conservation and care. Some zoos even have costume competitions where visitors can take photos of their favorite costumed animal.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Boo at the Zoo is a fun, not-scary family event featuring spirited activities and delectable treats for guests of all ages. Costumes are permitted, however, guests are reminded that costumes must not expose excessive portions of skin. Guests who wear costumes that are deemed inappropriate or offensive by zoo staff may be asked to remove their costume or leave the park. This is to ensure the safety of our guests, visitors and animals. For more information, please visit the Boo at the Zoo website.
