The International Alliance of Theatrical and Stage Employees (IATSE), whose members include wardrobe and lighting designers, stagehands and technical operators, is one of the larger unions in the city, with over 8,000 workers. In addition to IATSE, many of the union’s members also belong to other federations, including the American Federation of Labor and the American Guild of Theatre Artists. Local 764 has been around since 1919 and is still going strong today. Among its members are costume designer Patricia White, former Broadway costume designer and current dresser of the Lion King Kathryn Rohe, as well as designers and technicians from the likes of Cirque du Soleil, Cirque duluté, and the Metropolitan Opera.

One of the larger organizations within the umbrella is United Scenic Artists, Local USA 829, a federation of unions in a variety of arts and sciences, including scenic and production design, makeup artists, lighting and stagehands, sound operators, and more. It maintains a small office in Manhattan and regional offices in Los Angeles and Chicago. Among its many enticing benefits are retirement plans, health insurance, and the ability to negotiate terms with employers. With the help of the local union, members can enjoy the finer things in life, from a fancy apartment to a new car. As a bonus, they get to mingle with other movers and shakers in the theater world.

Another cool union to check out is Costume Designers Guild, Local 892, which has been around in the business since the 1920s. This organization has some hefty dues to pay, but membership is well worth the effort. On top of the usual perks, members have access to the best designers and the biggest name in the business, as well as a large pool of costumers to draw from.
