A costume shop is typically a room where costumes for film or theatre productions are created, designed, constructed, and stored for either the business or individual selling the costume. Costume designers, costume makers, seamstresses, and builders all work together in costume shops. The shops themselves may range from a small home with several floors to a large industrial shop with hundreds of feet of floors. In some cases, shops are run by employees while in others, the owner runs the shop alone. Either way, the shop must have a large supply of costumes in order to keep on producing new shows, or else the shop would quickly go out of business. Otherwise, the owner needs to find someone who can run it, or else the only costumes on hand will be those that have been purchased from the store.
Students enrolled in costume making and designing schools generally work one to three years as a construction worker before choosing to enter the industry full time. After working in a construction company for several years, most students will choose to start their own design shop. Most students have chosen to work in this field because they love to create, and they like to know they can make something special to please someone special. The majority of students in costume construction work in television or film departments, but there is also a good amount of work experience costumes having to do with the military. Students who complete an internship will usually be offered a job as a production assistant. These jobs generally require little education and work experience, but it is possible to obtain a degree in costume design and construction from many of the schools that offer internships.
When a student has worked in the theatre for several years, he or she may have the opportunity to take over a supervisor position. This supervisor is the person who oversees all aspects of production inside the shop, as well as hands out specific duties. Working as a supervisor requires a lot of planning, as well as management skills and the ability to motivate. Students interested in working as a supervisor will have to complete a four-year degree at a university that offers a broad range of courses in management. Those who choose a career as a police officer or security officer will be expected to complete a four-year degree as well, so these two options may not be the best route for those interested in working in the theatre industry.
