Double Fine’s Costume Quest Review

costume quest

Double Fine’s first sequel is a charming role-playing game with a wry sense of humor that will please fans of the original and anyone looking for something a little different. The game’s charm comes from its charming aesthetic, its ability to lighten up darker areas of the map for exploration and most importantly, its ability to give each character a unique way to interact with their environment in combat.

While the story is a bit of a letdown compared to the original, it still feels as though the world the characters inhabit is a real place that could exist. While some of the dialogue feels a bit forced, there is enough humor to make the world feel alive.

The turn-based combat is a lot of fun, with each costume being able to swap in and out during battles. Each costume has its own unique abilities, from a clown’s Laughter Is the Best Medicine to a superhero’s devastating uppercuts. A running gag is the candy corn costume, which doesn’t do anything except sit there.

Unlike Double Fine’s previous games, which had four to five year development cycles, the team worked on Costume Quest for under a year. Schafer has said that this shortened time frame was beneficial because it allowed them to focus on the gameplay and lessen the amount of features in the final product.

Costume Quest is currently available for free on the Epic Games Store as part of their 15 days of free games. If you haven’t yet, we highly recommend checking it out.
